Is Purgatory a place?
Open question
The Church has not defined whether Purgatory is a “place” in the spatial sense. The councils teach purification after death without defining its geography. In his General Audience of 4 August 1999, John Paul II described it as a “condition of existence”. Many Fathers and Doctors used spatial language, but no particular map is binding. What is essential is that the final purification is real, not merely a metaphor. Read The Place of Purgatory.
Private revelation What the saints and mystics add
Purgatory as a place, souls serving their Purgatory on earth, haunted houses.
