Can I avoid Purgatory?
Common teaching Current norm
What the Church holds
Common teaching It is possible, and the Church tells us how.
- "A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain" (CCC 1472).
- Meanwhile the Christian should accept sufferings "as a grace", and strive "by works of mercy and charity, as well as by prayer and the various practices of penance, to put off completely the 'old man'" (CCC 1473).
- Current norm Add the sacraments at the end (CCC 1525), the plenary indulgence at the point of death (Grant 12), and preparation for one's own hour (CCC 1014).
